Jcc Palm Beach Gardens Bridge Lessons
Bridge is still virtual! Have you always wanted to learn to play bridge or want to improve your skills? SJCC past Board President and ACBL-accredited bridge teacher Alan Tesler will teach you the game. Check out our current class offerings below.
Please note: at this time, all bridge classes are virtual, using Zoom and Shark Bridge. Detailed instructions for accessing online classes will be provided after registration or purchase of a punch card.
Rates + Registration Information
Pre-registration is required for Bridge Basics 2 and 3 (see full details below). All other classes are drop-in only and charged on a per-class basis. Students may move between courses and Supervised Play as desired from week to week. All classes will be 2-2.5 hours, starting at the scheduled start time, and will end no later than the shown end time.
Students MUST purchase a punch card in advance for drop-in classes. Reservations are not required, but students must have an available "punch" on their card. Contact instructor Alan Tesler (atesler3@comcast.net) in advance for detailed instructions on how to join the online class.

Spring Classes
Bridge Basics 2
This 4-lesson series for beginners focuses on competitive auctions, when both sides are bidding, emphasizing a modern aggressive approach. The manual, Bridge Basics 2, must be purchased separately. Supplementary materials will be emailed after registration. The first 6 lessons of the beginner series, Bridge Basics 1, or an equivalent playing/learning experience are prerequisites.

Bridge Basics 3
This 4-lesson series for beginners completes the 14-lesson beginner series. It introduces several commonly-used conventions — Stayman, Jacoby Transfers, Strong 2C opening bids, Blackwood, and Gerber. The manual,Bridge Basics 3, must be purchased separately. Supplementary materials will be emailed after registration. The first 10 lessons of the beginner series, Bridge Basics 1 and Bridge Basics 2, or an equivalent playing/learning experience are prerequisites.

Declarer Play
This 12-lesson course is for those who know the basics of bidding, but who want to improve their ability as Declarer. It's also valuable for the more experienced players who wish to improve their Declarer play. It starts with the fundamental strategies that Declarer employs to take all the tricks to which he is entitled, reviews basic bidding concepts, moves on to developing tricks, and concludes with techniques for identifying the "dangerous" opponent and avoiding giving her the lead. As this course follows Beginning Bridge, there is a strong emphasis on bidding review.

Introduction to Two-over-One
These 4 lessons are an introduction to the popular Two-over-One Game-Forcing bidding system, a variation on Standard American bidding. The first two lessons emphasize auctions that begin with a two-over-one response, and the final two lessons emphasize auctions that begin with a response of 1NT to an opening bid of 1 of a major. These are the cornerstones of the Two-over-One system.

Intermediate Bidding Lessons – "Polishing" Your Basics
This is a 14-lesson series that goes BEYOND the basics of Standard American bidding that everyone should know, clarifying and enhancing what is taught in a Beginning Bridge series.

Supervised Play – Afternoons
This is unstructured play, with advice and review offered based on whatever problems arise from the randomly dealt hands. While aimed at intermediate players who are trying or considering trying Duplicate Bridge, these sessions can be useful for anyone who has completed Beginning Bridge, for advanced beginners, and for intermediate players. Each week's class stands on its own; it isn't necessary to take the full series. These hands are DIFFERENT from those used in the Tuesday evening Supervised Play class.

Supervised Play – Evenings
This class will offer a mixture of hands, some taken from lessons on specific topics, and some randomly dealt hands. While aimed at intermediate players who are trying or considering trying Duplicate Bridge, these sessions can be useful for anyone who has completed Beginning Bridge, for advanced beginners, and for intermediate players. Each week's class stands on its own; it isn't necessary to take the full series. These hands are DIFFERENT from those in the Wednesday afternoon Supervised Play class.

Defensive Play
This nine-lesson series presents the principles of standard defensive card play, including leads, second-hand play, third-hand play, and attitude signals.

Valuable Conventions
Four classes presenting commonly-used valuable conventions: Fourth Suit Forcing (used so Responder can force to Game), New Minor Forcing (used by Responder to find major suit fits), Jacoby 2NT (a Game-forcing response to a major suit opening bid), and 1430 (an improvement on the Blackwood convention).

Advanced Declarer Play Techniques
These two classes present the fundamentals of two powerful tools for Declarers: end-plays and squeezes. Using these techniques is within the grasp of any intermediate Bridge player. The classes will be offered both in the morning and in the evening
